Independent publication. Not a charity, not a lodging operator, and not affiliated with Ronald McDonald House Charities. Why we say this
Charles Village · Baltimore, MD 21218
An independent guide for graduate and pre-law students, the families who visit them, and anyone spending a few days or a few weeks along the Charles Street corridor. Budget a stay, plan twelve weeks of LSAT or MCAT study, find a quiet desk, and learn the transit before you need it.
From the managing editor
Most of the people who write to us are in the middle of something. A parent who has just dropped a first-year off at Homewood and wants to know whether the Light RailLink is a sensible way back to Penn Station. A paralegal in Remington who has finally decided to sit the LSAT in the spring. A grandmother spending three weeks in a Mount Vernon apartment while her daughter finishes a fellowship, who would like a quiet place to read that is not the apartment.
This guide is for them. We cover the stretch of Baltimore that runs up Charles Street from the harbor to the universities: how to get around without a car, what a stay of a few days or a few weeks really costs, where to study when the dorm or the sublet is too loud, and how to build a twelve-week plan for the LSAT or MCAT that you can keep while life carries on around you.
We are a small, independent publication working out of Charles Village. We don’t run a guest house, we don’t take bookings, and we aren’t connected to any charity. The numbers in our planner are honest estimates, not quotes, so check the current fare or rate before you spend money. And tell us when we get something wrong. We fix it quickly.

Interactive planner
Two tools that answer the two questions we get most. What will a stay of 3 to 45 days cost, hotel against short-term apartment? And how should twelve weeks of LSAT or MCAT hours be split? Both run in your browser and send nothing anywhere.
Getting around
Nearly everything a visiting student or family needs sits within a mile of one north–south spine. Learn these four lines and you can leave the car parked.
Quiet study spots
A timed LSAT or MCAT section wants a hard chair, a clear desk and forty minutes of quiet. Here is how the main options compare. Hours change with the season and the academic calendar, so check before you go.
| Spot | Area | Best for | Noise | Access |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Enoch Pratt Free Library, Central (State Library Resource Center) | Mount Vernon, Cathedral St | Full timed sections and practice tests | Quiet reading rooms | Free and open to the public, with Wi-Fi and plenty of seating |
| George Peabody Library | Mount Vernon Place | An hour of reading in a remarkable room | Hushed, but visitors pass through | Open to visitors on a limited schedule. Events can close it, and it isn’t built for long laptop sessions |
| Pratt neighborhood branches | Waverly, Hampden, Roland Park | Afternoon blocks close to Charles Village | Quiet to moderate | Free, smaller rooms and shorter hours than Central |
| University libraries | Homewood and downtown campuses | Enrolled students and affiliates | Silent floors available | Usually ID-restricted, so visitors shouldn’t count on getting in |
| Cafés on St. Paul and Charles | Charles Village, Station North | Flashcards and review, not timed work | Moderate to loud | Buy something, and take the long practice test somewhere quieter |
Short-stay budgeting
These are the typical pre-tax nightly ranges our planner starts from. Weekday and summer rates are usually softer. Graduation, move-in and big game weekends are not.
